Welcome!

On this website, you can find my travel log of our experimental trekking in the Inner Dolpo and Dhaulagiri region in Nepal. In fall 2009, we discovered this area with a small group of fellow travellers, guided by Himalaya Trekking. We wanted to cross the rarely visited Mu La and to traverse towards the Hidden Valley. Read here if this all worked out!

Part 8 - This is it

Brrrrrr it's cold when we get up after a good night sleep. The weather is fantastic. Clear blue sky and a cold wind. Soon after our start we see little stone houses, looking like tandoori ovens. We learn that these houses are 'yak shit collection rooms'. The locals collect the yak shit for fuel; in these little houses you can keep them dry.

Today will be a tough day - we have to climb two passes. The camp site was at 5000m and the first pass is Niwal Pass at 5420m. My energy level is not very high yet and it is a tough cookie to climb that thing. But the stunning landscape is all worth it. On top, I collect some pebbles and leave a message for my mother. Within a few weeks she will be here as well, coming from an other valley.

After an amazing decent and a second pass, Tuchela Bhanjyang (4890m), we have a breathtaking view on the valleys of Mustang.

We cannot believe what we are seeing. The landscape looks like some kind of surreal Dali painting. Everytime I have to stop to absorb this landscape. This is why you are doing these things! Unfortunately, the weather is changing. After a steep descend, we reach the campsite, called Sangdak (winter settlement at 4100m). Tomorrow a day off and then...towards the unknown areas to find an opening to the Hidden Valley!
